Medieval Women in Modern Situations
The roots of all these projects originate from the depiction of medieval women, and how even in the 21st century many inequality matters are still the same.
How can we know how medieval women were seen? Well, there were handmade illustrated books, called Illuminated Manuscripts, and these were almost similar to the social media of their day. Hear me out.
Mostly written by men to teach people right and wrong, they were heavily influenced by religion, social and political issues, and of course opinion.
General consensus was women were evil temptresses, and their attention should be on their husbands and children - not themselves. Well - F that!
The women illustrated in these Illuminated Manuscripts had opinions, a sense of humour, and a right to be seen. Hopefully these larger-scale pieces can give them a modern voice and empower others who may feel they can't be themselves.
Site Specific
In medieval times artwork was displayed in churches, cathedrals, and other religious sites.
This makes sense when we consider the artwork of the time had a strongly religious context. Women were compared to the virgin Mary and encouraged to fit into that ideological box.
Displaying these posters in public, in spaces where modern women - and all walks of life for that matter - regularly visit, and wait, and think, would be an appropriate space.
